Trained as a radio and television technician, then stayed on until 1994. Specialised in TV repair, satellite technology and communications engineering. On the side: the unofficial decoders of the day for RAI, Tele 5 and later Premiere — I programmed them and developed new decoder hardware.
Field assignment in Bosnia for Siemens under the UN peacekeeping mission UNPROFOR, staying on through the handover to NATO’s IFOR. Built satellite and microwave radio links on high-rise rooftops to keep communications up. Included weapons training and instruction — long guns and handguns. Until 1997.
